Travis Porter Arrest Stemmed From 'Honest Mistake'

'He just messed up and left it in his bag,' Travis Porter's Ali tells MTV News of the gun found in Strap's bag at the airport.

On Wednesday, Travis Porter member Strap was arrested when police at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport found a firearm in one of his bags at a security checkpoint. But according to the trio's other members, Ali and Quez, things aren't as sinister as they may seem.

"The situation was, like, an honest mistake," Quez told MTV News on Thursday (February 16) in New York.

"He just messed up and left it in his bag," Ali reiterated.

According to the group, the gun was registered to Strap, whose real name is Harold Duncan. When traveling to the airport for a promo trip to New York, the rapper simply forgot to remove the pistol from his luggage. At the time of the interview, Quez confirmed that the wheels were already in motion to get Strap out of jail.

"He ain't in there for life. We know he gonna get out," he said. "They're going to pay his bond right now."

Quez was actually with Strap when he was arrested and described the entire ordeal to MTV News. "It was crazy, because he was looking so confused," the rapper said when detailing the search and subsequent arrest. "He didn't know what was going on, and they told him, 'You got some business in your bag, bro.' "

The trio have been a staple on the Atlanta rap scene for a number of years. They first gained notoriety after appearing on Roscoe Dash's 2008 hit "All the Way Turnt Up," and in 2010, the guys broke through off the strength of their strip-club anthem "Make It Rain." The song peaked at #9 on the Billboard rap charts and piqued interest for the group's oft-delayed debut album, No Sleep to Atlanta, on RCA Records.

Tips, Tricks, And Techniques To Stop Snoring And Get Some Rest ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Many people are affected by snoring, whether it is their own problem or that of someone they live with. Snoring is a very common occurrence, but there is usually something that can be done about it. If you are looking for ways to deal with snoring in your life, read the following article.

Unstop your nose to quit snoring. Snoring can be an embarrassing problem. It can relate to a number of factors, not the least of which is nasal congestion. One way to address snoring is to talk to your doctor about decongestants. These medications can be a very effective remedy not just for the embarrassment of snoring but also for the underlying condition.

If your sleeping partner is driving you crazy with his or her snoring, try to bring up the subject in a loving, non-confrontational way. Refrain from accusations and belittling comments that can hurt or put the person on the defensive. If you are kind, your partner will be more willing to talk openly about the problem.

People who snore often have a higher incidence of headaches and migraines than those who do not. This may be caused by the constant interruption of sleep that snorers suffer from, causing excessive fatigue and tiredness. Check with your doctor to see if snoring may be the cause of your headaches.

Make your bedroom as allergy-proof as you can. If you suffer from allergies, it is important that you try to prevent congestion due to allergic reactions from affecting your sleep. Congestion during sleep leads to snoring. Remove as many of your allergy triggers as possible from your bedroom in order to give yourself the best chance of enjoying a peaceful night?s rest.

If you smoke, stop. If this is not possible, then you should make an effort not to smoke just before going to sleep. If you are a non-smoker, make sure to avoid second hand smoke prior to bed. Smoke will cause the throat to swell and become inflamed, leading to more difficulties with snoring.

Try sleeping on your side if you snore. Your tendency to snore can be affected by your sleep position. If you always sleep on your back, your throat muscles will be more likely to snap shut as they relax. This will cause you to snore, since air cannot pass through as easily. Try switching to sleeping on your side in order to correct this.

To stop snoring, go on a weight loss regimen if you are currently overweight. Fat is intruding on the available space for your air passages, and those narrower passages are causing you to snore. If you get rid of the fat, your passages will be able to open fully, and you can stop snoring.

Did you know that being overly stressed-out can cause you to snore? Stress can affect breathing and interrupt normal sleeping patterns, both of which can cause snoring. There are many ways to combat stress, such as, relaxation exercises and meditation. Try to reduce your stress and you may be able to eliminate snoring!

Consider elevating your head in order to eliminate some pressure off your airways. This assists you in your breathing, which will decrease your snoring. You could also raise your bed?s head by placing blocks underneath the bed posts. Otherwise, you could just prop up your entire whole body with some pillows.

If your snoring seems severe, you should speak to your doctor. You will probably need a sleep study to determine if you have sleep apnea. If you do, the doctor will probably recommend that you use a CPAP machine at nighttime. The CPAP machine forces air into your airways to keep them open. This keeps you from snoring and it also makes sure you are well oxygenated.

As stated before, many people snore in their sleep. Snoring can be a precursor to health problems that can come in the future. There are different ways to stop snoring, with some being painfully simple. Use the information from this article to stop your snoring in its tracks and sleep peacefully.

You may find some fairly interesting pieces in such an industry. Items like paintings, floor rugs, lighting fixtures are commonly found in many stores. As well as counter tops, cabinetry, tiling, hardwood flooring, and many other things that you will need for any redecorating purposes or renovation projects.

Santorum revels in sudden support ? but how deep? (AP)

BOISE, Idaho ? The latest Republican to surge in polls, Rick Santorum is trying to turn his newfound strength into something lasting.

Curious Republicans now pack his rallies. Supporters have funneled nearly $4 million to his formerly empty campaign account over the past seven days. And his staff is plotting an aggressive strategy to challenge Mitt Romney in Romney's native Michigan and beyond.

But things don't look so strong just beneath the surface.

Santorum is underfunded and outmanned. He's still lacking in organization, a month and a half into the primary season. And, after he won three contests in a single day last week, his opponents ? on the right and the left ? have begun their own efforts to tear him down.

An upbeat Santorum faced more than 1,000 people in a Boise high school auditorium Tuesday night and said his ideas would carry him through.

He said he's someone "who can overcome the disadvantages of money and media attention and still be in a position to win. Ideas matter."

But his challenges were on display the day before in Tacoma, Wash., where hundreds of supporters waited on cold, wet cement stairs in the dark to see the Republican presidential candidate with whom they're barely familiar.

"I don't know a lot about him, except I know he's more conservative than some of the other candidates like Mitt Romney," said Tanya Franklin, a 54-year-old airline reservationist, who says she'll probably vote for Santorum in her state's March 3 caucuses.

The former Pennsylvania senator has surged to a virtual tie with Romney in nationwide polling following his surprising sweep in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri last week. But, as Franklin suggests, his popularity may have less to do with who he is than who he isn't. Santorum is not Romney. And with Newt Gingrich's recent decline, that's enough for some conservatives ? at least for now.

Santorum had 30 percent support to 28 percent for Romney in a national poll released this week by the Pew Research Center. But the same poll said 31 percent of all adults had never heard of or couldn't rate him. That's a significantly higher number than for Romney, Gingrich or Ron Paul. Even among Republicans, one in five told Pew they didn't know enough about Santorum to rate him.

Romney and others are now working to make sure that changes.

The long-time front-runner for the nomination, Romney has deployed surrogates such as a former Santorum Senate colleague, Jim Talent of Missouri, to attack Santorum's support for earmarks in Congress. The conservative Club for Growth has been equally critical. And Romney has been aggressive on the campaign trail, suggesting in recent days that Santorum and Gingrich represent the kind of overspending Washington insiders the tea party abhors.

At the same time, left-leaning groups such as the Center For American Progress and Emily's List are going after Santorum's comments on women. A staunch social conservative, Santorum has been critical of women serving in combat and sometimes in the workplace.

"Sadly the propaganda campaign launched in the 1960s has taken root," reads a passage in Santorum's book. "The radical feminists succeeded in undermining the traditional family and convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness."

"These things that Rick Santorum is attacking are broadly supported by women and American families," said Tara McGuinness of the Center for American Progress. "It isn't 1952. Most American families have two working parents."

Santorum says he's not going to sit back and just take such shots.

On Tuesday, he began running ads on Fox News Channel in Michigan. It was a signal to supporters ? and to donors ? that Santorum planned to contest the state where Romney grew up and his father served as governor.

Indeed, Santorum told reporters Tuesday night he will "hopefully finish a good strong second" to Romney in Michigan. "We think we can plant our flag there and do well," he said.

Look for Santorum to emphasize his message on manufacturing revival, especially in hard-hit Michigan. He plans a Thursday economic speech in Detroit, and his advisers see an opening to use Romney's words against him ? especially Romney's 2008 New York Times op-ed titled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt."

Sensing vulnerability, Romney tried to pre-empt that in an op-ed Tuesday in The Detroit News. He argued that the government should sell its share in automakers and return the profits to taxpayers.

At the same time, Santorum's advisers are bracing for an onslaught from Romney. They were largely spared in the last trio of states ? Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado.

"We fully expect his search-and-destroy methods to be put on display. That's his M.O.: instead of focusing on his own record, their first inclination is to tear down his opponent," said Hogan Gidley, Santorum's communications chief.

But there are limits to what Santorum's little team can do.

He refuses to hire a pollster and pledges to campaign from his gut. He has brought on veterans from Mike Huckabee's orbit, including the top spokeswoman for Huckabee's 2008 presidential bid and Michele Bachmann's 2012 race. Other aides, too, are coming aboard as Santorum's strategy meetings have grown from just one state to a handful of competitive races.

Yet he lacks a headquarters to have those meetings. Often, Santorum's top aides confer over conference calls or Skype.

"We're building," Santorum said. "We've got a great volunteer base. In some states we're going to have staff. Other states we aren't. We're going to use volunteers."

The disorganization was on display in Boise and caused problems at the Tacoma event, which was held at an outdoor venue adjacent to a camp site of the local Occupy protesters. Lacking the staff to handle such logistics on his own, Santorum had left the planning to the state GOP.

A confident Santorum took the stage as supporters chanted, "We pick Rick!"

"You have very good taste. Thank you," Santorum responded.

But in a matter of minutes, his supporters were overshadowed by shouting from liberal protesters who packed the event. Two were dragged away by police in the midst of his speech.

On Tuesday, Santorum said the Tacoma incident has led him to explore Secret Service protection. He said it's unfortunate that some people "can get a little rowdy and sometimes a little violent." Currently, Romney is the only GOP contender with Secret Service protection.

A week after his trio of victories, Santorum said he's raised nearly $4 million since then and expects to hit that mark soon.

Romney, by contrast, averaged more than $2 million a week over the last three months of 2011. Santorum raised less than $1 million over the entire quarter.

It's unclear how long Romney will wait to take an anti-Santorum message to the airwaves. His allies with the Restore Our Future super PAC already have bought time in several states and plan to go after Santorum aggressively.

Romney aides point to three vulnerabilities beyond Santorum's support for some earmarks.

They note that Santorum was one of a handful of Republicans who voted to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the federal circuit court in 1998. Sotomayor was nominated by President Barack Obama, and confirmed by the Senate, to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009.

Santorum also faced criticism during the New Hampshire and South Carolina primary campaigns for opposing right-to-work legislation, an issue Romney aides expect to re-emerge.

They also expect Santorum's endorsement of then-Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter over Rep. Pat Toomey in the 2004 GOP Senate primary to become an issue. Santorum said in a video appeal for Specter, a social moderate, that the senior Republican senator was "with us on the votes that matter." In 2009, Specter changed his party affiliation to Democrat.

Gingrich won't make things easier for Santorum either.

Despite falling in the polls, the former House speaker says he's the strongest Romney alternative.

The National Review, an influential conservative magazine, published an editorial calling on Gingrich to step aside and endorse Santorum. But Gingrich this week called the article "silly" and said he had no intention of abandoning the race.

Minn. school board ends policy blamed for bullying (AP)

COON RAPIDS, Minn. ? Minnesota's largest school district has abandoned a much-criticized policy that required teachers to remain neutral when issues of sexual identity came up in the classroom, replacing it with a policy designed to create respectful discussion about controversial topics.

With only one dissenting vote, the Anoka-Hennepin School Board on Monday night dropped a policy that is the subject of two lawsuits by critics who contend it muzzled teachers and prevented them from holding effective discussions to reduce bullying against students who are gay or perceived to be gay.

The new policy says when contentious political, religious, social matters or economic issues come up ? it does not specifically cite sexuality issues ? teachers shouldn't try to persuade students to adopt a particular viewpoint. It calls for teachers to foster respectful exchanges of views. It also says in such discussions, staff should affirm the dignity and self-worth of all students, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

"This policy is truly a compromise," board member Scott Wenzel said after more than an hour of testimony from more than 20 people. "And I truly hope that it will move this district and community forward."

Rachael Hawley, a senior at Anoka High School who led a petition drive against the old policy, said she isn't sure how much of a difference the new "Respectful Learning Environment" policy will make in the long run but hopes it opens the door to better discussions.

The debate over how teachers should handle controversial classroom topics ballooned after six students in the district committed suicide in less than two years.

A parent of one of the students who committed suicide says her son was bullied for being gay. Gay advocacy groups say some of the others students who killed themselves were also bullied. The district has said its internal investigation found no evidence that bullying contributed to the deaths, but the district changed its anti-bullying and anti-harassment policies in October 2010 to state that harassment or bullying of gay students wouldn't be tolerated.

The district, which is the target of two lawsuits over the old policy, has found itself in the national spotlight over the issue, and board member Kathy Tingelstad and several parents who testified said they didn't appreciate it.

"I just think we could have done a lot better job," Tingelstad told reporters after she cast the lone no vote. "I think we were being pushed by outside influences that were outside of our school district. I know we're setting some national standards here tonight but I'm disappointed," she said, adding that the board could have better addressed the concerns of those who testified against the change.

Julie Blaha, president of the Anoka-Hennepin local of the teachers union Education Minnesota, said the months of discussions about the old policy may prove to be more important than the language of the new policy itself because of the awareness raised about the problems of bullying. She said the new policy sets a better tone, and the next step will be for teachers to discuss how they'll translate it into a safe, welcoming environment for all students.

Blaha told the board the new policy could just become buried among all the district's other policies, or it could become "the first few paragraphs of a new chapter ... in which everybody feels safe and welcome at school. A chapter where it is clear that every student, staff member and family is valued for who they are. And a chapter full of rigorous conversations between professionals about how to improve our school climate."

The old neutrality policy had the support of parents who believe homosexual conduct is immoral and told the board they don't want their children taught otherwise. Barb Anderson, of Champlin, asked the board not to give in to demands for changing it.

"If you pass a policy with weak language of appeasement, the gay agenda will be given an even greater foothold in our school district," Anderson said. "We are at a crossroads. You either cave in the demands of the homosexual activists, an action that will make our schools unsafe for all kids, or you stand firm and protect the children."

The new policy takes effect immediately in the district of about 38,500 students and 2,800 teachers. It might move two lawsuits filed by students, former students and parents against the neutrality policy closer to settlement. U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Rau has scheduled the next round of mediation for March 1 and 2 in the Both sides have been keeping those discussions confidential, but the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Southern Poverty Law Center, which are representing the plaintiffs, issued a statement applauding the policy change.

"Today is the first day in nearly 18 years that Minnesota's Anoka-Hennepin School District no longer has a harmful policy that singles out lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. Although we would have preferred for the District to have repealed this stigmatizing policy without replacing it, we are pleased that the new policy expressly requires district staff to affirm the dignity and self-worth of all students, including LGBT students," the statement said. "The repeal of this policy is an important first step, but the District must do much more to create a safe, welcoming, and respectful learning environment for all students, including LGBT and gender non-conforming students, and those perceived as such."

Faces beyond the numbers of long-term unemployed (AP)

J.R. Childress is up before the sun, bustling about in the French colonial brick house he built. He helps pack his wife's lunch, downs some eggs or cereal for breakfast, pores over online and newspaper job listings and hopes ? even prays ? this will be the day when his fortunes turn around.

He's determined to stay busy, job or no job, for sanity's sake. Maybe he'll help a neighbor. Exercise. Or check out computer blueprints of construction projects around Winston-Salem, N.C., to stay connected to the world where he thrived for three decades. Childress has been laid off twice since late 2009, most recently for 10 months.

"Every day is a struggle," he says in a soft drawl. "The struggle is the unknown. You've worked your way up the ladder and you get to a point in life and a position in work where you're comfortable ... then all of a sudden everything goes away. It's like being thrown into a hole and you're climbing to get up, but it's greased. There's no way of getting out."

The frustrations of one 53-year-old North Carolina man are multiplied millions of times over across time zones and generations in a country still gripped by economic anxiety, despite increasing signs of recovery. And they resound in a presidential campaign pitting an incumbent defending his economic record against GOP opponents who are attacking it.

Unemployment in January was at its lowest level in three years ? 8.3 percent ? and 1.8 million jobs were added last year, compared with about 1 million in 2010. But there's still a long way to go: There are 5.6 million fewer jobs than there were when the recession began in late 2007.

About 12.8 million people are out of work and what's especially troubling, according to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, is the large number of long-term unemployed ? more than 40 percent have been jobless more than six months.

The long-term unemployed don't fit into any neat category. They're young and old. They have high school diplomas and master's degrees. Some become so discouraged, they stop looking for a time or become mid-life college students. Others find temporary jobs, then return to the jobless rolls for long stretches. In 2011, the average length of being out of work was 39 weeks ? about nine months.

But statistics tell only part of the story. They don't gauge the despair of a thirtysomething office manager who has stopped counting how many resumes he's sent out. Or the apprehension of a 60-ish tool-and-die maker who lost his job, returned to school, but still can't find work ? and doubts he ever will again.

Or the rejection J.R. Childress feels, declaring that unemployment "makes you feel you're not a part of society because you're not earning your way."

Childress started working after high school, first in factories, then in construction, eventually earning a six-figure salary as vice president of operations at a company.

In October 2009, he was laid off when road construction and building projects came to a near halt. After a year without work, Childress took a huge pay cut to be a construction foreman, but that job ended last April. He's convinced he has two strikes against him: his age and lack of college degree.

"I'm putting out resumes, but they're going into a black hole," he says. Prospective employees, he says "want 33, not 53. ... They say, `We really like you, but if we spend our time training you, when construction comes back, you're going to leave.'" He pauses, and adds: "That's not paying my bills."

Childress' wife works and their 24-year-old twins are out of college so that eases their financial burden, but he says he asks himself: "`Am I going to be 75 or 80 and not be able to retire? ... What did I do to deserve this? When is it going to turn around for me?'"

Jerome Greene doesn't mince words when he describes life without a steady paycheck for more than three years.

"It's been like hell," he says. "It's very hard to see people leave and go to work in the morning and come home every night. It's hard to see people spending money, going out and having fun and you can't. It's very stressing. But there are people in worst situations than I have and I feel sorry for them."

Greene, about to turn 50, worked for 16 years as an Oracle software developer, most recently at a Pennsylvania company that made electronic components for cars. When he was laid off in June 2008, the recession was just taking hold, and he still had job interviews. By fall, with the economy in free fall, his phone stopped ringing.

Greene hoped the downturn would be brief and he'd weather it with unemployment benefits.

But the jobless rate hovered above 9 percent and Greene's 99 weeks of unemployment expired. He had trouble sleeping. Depression set in. Without health insurance, he took precautions ? carrying hand sanitizer and his own pen when doing errands to avoid getting sick and having to pay $65 for a doctor's visit.

"There's no room for error," he says "There's no extra money."

At the same time, Greene, who is single and lives outside of Pottstown, Pa., has become an active social networker, online and in person. He participates in several groups, looking for job tips, sometimes doing presentations himself, perfecting his "elevator speech" ? the 30-second pitch to prospective employers.

"Emotionally, it helps," he says. "You see that you're not alone. ... I guess you can say misery loves company. But there are positive people, too."

Mingling has other benefits, too. One holiday party led to freelance work on web development projects.

Greene is encouraged by the improving economy and has been getting calls for interviews, though they're outside the Pennsylvania area and he'd prefer to stay put. "Maybe," he says, "there is an end to this."

No matter, the experience has changed his outlook.

"It has made me very cynical when it comes to the work environment," he says. "People have to take charge of managing their careers. They should prepare for the next round of layoffs ... The rest of the world is beginning to catch up with the U.S. Companies are going to continue to outsource, they're going to continue to do stupid things ... and I don't think recessions are ever going to go away. Having a job just interrupts a job search."

___

The memory stings even now for Jon Creek, all these years after the job interview.

He'd applied to be a bookkeeper at a property management company when one of the owners caught him off guard: "He said, `You've been out of work for a year now. You can only clean the garage so many times. Why can't you get a job?'" Creek recalls.

"My answer was, `I'm trying to get a job now,'" he says.

Creek, who lives in Mason, a suburb of Cincinnati, was a construction company office manager until he and almost everyone else at the firm were laid off in December 2007. He'd known the business was in trouble and says he actually turned down another better-paying job earlier, out of loyalty.

It took 18 months to land part-time work as an insurance agent's assistant at $240 a week ? a dollar less than his unemployment checks.

A year later, Creek was stunned when a certified letter arrived with his final paycheck and notice that his job was over. Again, it was the economy. To add to the injury, his boss had posted the news on her Facebook page before telling him. "Everybody knew but me," he says.

And since she hadn't done the proper paperwork, he couldn't file for unemployment.

That was August 2010. Creek ? who holds a bachelor's degree in business administration ? has been looking since, worried that as time passes, someone unemployed for, say, six months may seem more appealing.

"I worked hard. I did everything right," he says. "Now I'm at the point of asking myself, `Will I ever be able to get anything?' It's not just about a salary. It's about being able to go out and say, `I do this. This is my identity.'"

On occasion, Creek, now 35, has become so discouraged, he's temporarily quit looking. "If you send out your resume so many times, every employer in the city has it," he says. "If you take it out of the mix for a while, perhaps you'll get noticed next time."

Being unemployed not only hurts financially ? Creek has an $11,000-plus student loan ? it leaves emotional scars, too. "The only people I talk to during the day are my wife, my dogs and service people," he says. "It's very isolating, very lonely."

His wife, Leslie, a financial analyst, is a constant comfort. "She tells me I'm smart, that I have a lot to offer," he says.

Creek is considering returning to school this fall to get a master's degree in accounting.

"Sometimes you feel like playing the victim card," he says, "but you really don't want to. It tells the employer you're not very confident. I tell myself good things are to come ... but it's hard to remain hopeful."

___

Jean Coyle knows it's ironic that long ago, she taught college classes about retirement planning.

As a tenured professor at universities in Illinois and New Mexico, she lectured on gerontology, age discrimination and women's issues. When she was 52, she made a life-changing move, entering the seminary and leaving with two masters' degrees. In 2002, she was ordained as a Presbyterian minister.

As an associate pastor at a Presbyterian church in Washington, D.C., Coyle did crisis work, visiting homes and hospitals, counseling and preaching, conducting funerals. She expected a long career but in 2007, she lost her job in a church budget cut.

At 62, Coyle ? who holds five degrees ? thought she had much to offer. She applied to hundreds of churches and organizations around the country.

"I don't know if I was really naive or not, idealistic or not," she says. "I just believed I was supposed to be doing this and something would happen. There would be an opportunity."

She hoped her past dealing with the sick and dying would prove especially valuable. "I think you might find a 26-year-old seminary graduate with that experience but not often," she says. "Churches say, `We want someone who's going to be there 20 years.'"

Coyle found a temporary staff job with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) but after three years of looking for a pastoral position, she reluctantly retired in 2010.

"I'm literally sitting in the midst of job search files that I'm finally throwing away," she says, from her home in Washington's Virginia suburbs. "I know I'm never going to be interviewed again. This is a major thing for me. It's hard to say. I'm a type-A person. I love working. I want to work until I drop and collapse at my desk. That wasn't meant to be. It's very painful, very difficult. ... The positive part is to be able to say I'm retired rather than I'm unemployed. But people often turn away and say, `Oh you're retired.' You feel discarded. You feel invisible."

Coyle stays busy by filling in for pastors when they're on vacation or ill and participates in 13 volunteer activities ? everything from pet therapy to neighborhood watch to usher at a college theater.

"I always used to tell my gerontology students," she says, "that the saddest thing in the world is to have the answers and no one is asking you the questions anymore."

___

Ted Casper figured the path to a paycheck would pass through the classroom.

When he was laid off at a semitrailer plant in southern Wisconsin in spring 2009, he initially thought he'd rebound quickly. He was a skilled tool-and-die maker and had never been unemployed for more than a few days.

"I thought I'd spend a week filling out applications," Casper says, "and I'd spend my next week deciding which of the three or four jobs I would take."

He soon discovered he had misjudged. "It was a real eye-opening experience," he says. "I started looking for work and no one was looking back."

It wasn't just that he had no prospects. His wife, Gail, who has diabetes and Addison's disease, a hormonal disorder, had already lost her job at an auto dealership. And they were in the final stages of foreclosure, no longer able to make their $900 monthly mortgage payments. Their annual income had plummeted from $90,000-$100,000 to about $23,000 ? mostly his unemployment checks.

Casper, then in his late 50s, followed a familiar route for unemployed blue-collar workers. He returned to school, enrolling at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville, Wis.

Two years later, he had an associate degree in industrial engineering technology. But he was 60, and competition was fierce ? and younger ? with thousands of unemployed factory workers in the area, many from a recently shuttered General Motors plant.

"I got zero responses," says Casper, of Edgerton, Wis. "I literally didn't even get the form letter that goes along with the `thank you but no thanks.'"

So last summer, Casper returned to Blackhawk to study business management.

"I kind of accepted the fact there's no employer out there that will hire me," he says wearily. He'd like to start a business ? making furniture is a possibility.

Casper is philosophical about his fate.

"There are times when you realize a lot of this is my fault," he says. "There were times when I was working and wasn't saving. ... On one level, it feels like someone should be taking care of me. On the other level, I feel I should have been doing it on my own."

He just received his first Social Security check, but still hopes for another career.

"If you can't find a job," he says, "maybe you've got to go out and create one. ... There's always something ahead. You just have to reach out for it."

Dennis Hansen sometimes wonders whether all his schooling was worth it.

An aquatics biologist, Hansen has taught college, had his research published in scientific journals and spoken at conferences from New York to Hawaii, but in recent years, he's bounced from no job to a temporary job to taking any job for a paycheck.

In late 2009, the Duluth, Minn., lab where he worked as operations manager, testing the toxicity of chemicals (and the impact on fish and water), closed because of declining business. Much of its work had come from Department of Defense contracts.

After a year without work, Hansen, 32, was hired to monitor Lake Michigan and Lake Superior water for the state and federal governments over two summers. He also had short stints as a census worker and as an extra post office hand during one holiday crush.

It hasn't been enough: Hansen says he has a $13,000 credit card debt and that's just for basics ? his $600 monthly mortgage, heat and food.

"It's definitely a roller coaster," Hansen says, with the ups coming when he's done well in a job interview and the downs when there's a rejection: "That's when I'm frustrated, angry and wondering why I went to college for 10 years."

Hansen is resourceful and versatile: In college, he stocked grocery shelves, put motors in yachts and worked as a valet. Since 2009, he's applied for everything from oil field worker in Williston, N.D., to chemist in Iraq for a government contractor.

"The more money they offer," he says, "the farther I am willing to go."

Hansen says he never expected to be out of work so long, figuring his experience and research would make him a shoo-in for a job.

In December, he had an interview but lost out to someone with a Ph.D. "I was beat out by someone even more overqualified than I was," he says. In January, another rejection.

His marriage plans are on hold ? "I don't want to have a potluck welfare wedding," he says ? and his joblessness casts a shadow over his relationship with his girlfriend.

"We were watching the news when there was a report that the economy is getting better," he recalls. "She said, `When is OUR economy going to get better?' That's just crushing for a guy."

In North Carolina, J.R. Childress spends Thursday nights at his group, Professionals in Transition, where the underemployed and the jobless meet to share tips, review resumes and support one another.

Childress is casting a wide net in his job search and having learned to live on a quarter of his former salary, he says, if a new position offered "half or better, I'd consider that a bonus."

He recently had promising news ? he was interviewed to be a contractor selling state license plates.

"You hope that just around the next corner or the next person you talk to is going to have something," he says. "I pray. I say show me the way. ... But you're no longer planning ahead. You're planning to get through the next day."

Vancouver Film School grads win prize from the ?29 Second Film ...

Eugene Kim, 26, a recent grad from Vancouver Film School was riding home in a bus one night when he stumbled with an amazing film opportunity. As he searched on his phone for free applications, he discovered an international film festival taking place in South Korea that was calling all filmmakers for a challenge: making a 29 second short-film with meaning and appeal.

Right away, he texted his roommates, Julien Trauman, Izabella Peregrino and Sebastien Dryland, also filmmakers recently out of film school, and pitched to them this idea. A week later, ?One Last Shot? had been shot, finalized and was ranked 9th out of approximately 1000 shorts-films in the competition.

This adventure was only possible, thanks to the will and drive that these young filmmakers have. Directed by Julien Trauman and produced by Eugene Kim and Sebastien Dryland, the film has received many compliments from the Korean audience.

?We sat down on a Sunday, after a few nights of brainstorming and started sending out emails and making phone calls to get a crew together?, says Kim. ?The script and shot list were finished that night, actors casted, and the concept of the film came together in only a few hours?, adds the producer who also counted with Sebastien Dryland to get everything done in such a short time.

The next day, they had a call time at 5 pm in a studio and the whole crew together. After seven hours ? between equipment pick up and return, the film was in the can and ready to go to post-production. In three days, picture edit, sound design and color correction were finished and the movie was uploaded on the web, only four days before the announcement of the productions moving on to the next phase of the competition.

?Even though we made it to 9th place, we had to get a second 29? short together before knowing if we had made it to the next round or not?, explains Eugene Kim. Only now, they had to chose a theme amongst three that had been laid out by the organizers of the festival. ?Life and??, ?Family is?? or ?Between Hope and Hopeless?. From the previous brainstorming sessions, the director Julien Trauman had a concept that worked well with the third theme. The race was up once again.

The crew members from the first short jumped right in to make the second film. ?Some had to find excuses to their every day jobs so that they could have the day off to be on set?, reveals Kim. This time, they had an important tool to bring more people on board.

?I showed a rental house our previous 29? and told them we are beginners in the industry and they got really excited with the idea of being part of it?, he explains. The actors casted had worked with Eugene Kim in a previous shoot and were convinced to volunteer for his new production after watching ?One Last Shot?.

?Post-production was harder the second time, since all of us were busy working on other film sets and we had very limited time to finish ?Dreams??, says Kim. The director and editor, Julien Trauman, worked on the show every night for two hours during four days after working 14h days on a feature film. Color correction and sound design were finished on the same day after picture lock.

According to Izabella Peregrino, the director of photography, they ?worked through the night, from 1am to 10 am straight?. ?Because we had to submit? ?Dreams? that day, before 12am in Korea and with the time difference, we had very little time to make any mistakes?, adds the producer.

The final results come out on December 15th, but this team has already won something much greater than any prize they can imagine. ?After grad I wasn?t really sure I could put together a project without the support from school and work on something that would make us proud, but we did it! These films gave us a huge confidence boost. If you have a good concept and you know the right people, you can make things happen?, admits Eugene Kim.

Here are the inks to both films. The password for both videos is graveley.

Karolina Kurkova reveals how thyroid problem caused premature ...

'I was 24 and going through menopause': Supermodel Karolina Kurkova reveals how thyroid problem caused 30lb weight gain and panic attacks

She is known for her come-hither lips and blonde locks.

But Karolina Kurkova has been through a far more private and less glamorous personal journey, she revealed yesterday.

Speaking with the Council of Fashion Designers of America at their A Well Balanced Life forum yesterday, the Czech model, 27, said that she had just had 'a little procedure' that had left her feeling emotional.

Model figure: Karolina Kurkova revealed that she had a premature menopause because of a thyroid problem three years ago

Model figure: Karolina Kurkova revealed that she had a premature menopause because of a thyroid problem three years ago

According to New York Magazine, the Victoria's Secret Angel explained that she 'didn?t know how big [the procedure] was going to be' and that it was related to a thyroid problem.

The magazine said that she emotionally revealed that she gained 30lbs from the problem three years ago ? and that a side-effect was 'going through menopause' aged just 24.

'I thought I was going crazy' she said to the panel and guests. 'I was having panic attacks every minute and I didn?t know what was happening, because I?ve been a healthy person. I?ve exercised all my life. I?ve always eaten well and taken care of myself.'

Though her agency, IMG, did not respond to requests for confirmation of her condition, slender and toned Ms Kurkova
now seems a picture of health ? the former Victoria's Secret model,
despite her thyroid problem and its worrying side-effects, went on to
have a baby in October 2009.

Thyroid illness: The facts

According to the ABC's Good Morning America, the symptoms that Ms Kurkova describes do not point to a specific thyroid illness.

While hypothyroidism, causing the release of too few thyroid hormones, is related to early menopause, when it comes to weight gain, it usually only causes a few extra pounds, said Dr Robert McConnell from the New York Thyroid Center at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.

He told GMA that condition is usually associated with people getting 'puffy' and that depression, sluggishness and low tolerance to colds are common.

Panic attacks are typically a symptom of hyperthyroidism ? meaning thyroid hormones are too high. However, weight loss ? as well as feeling anxious ? is associated with the disorder.

The thyroid plays a large part in women's reproductivity and problems with the gland will affect a woman's menstrual cycle.

'Thyroid conditions can cause infertility,' said Dr Loren W Greene, an endocrinologist at NYU Langone Medical Center.

While premature menopause may be related to an autoimmune attack and inflammation, such as chronic thyroiditis or Hashimoto's disease, Dr Greene cautioned that Ms Kurkova's illness may have been related to the dieting that is so much a part of the modelling industry.

'It's much more likely if you're not having periods and you're that skinny that the association has to do with?not having enough body fat to put out sex hormones to have normal periods,' she told GMA.

The 5ft 11in gazelle told the panel that, growing up, she 'was
the one who stood out', reports Huffington Post. Landing the cover of
Vogue at just 16-years-old was a salutary lesson that 'being different is OK,' she said.

The high-powered gathering of fashion names, including Anna Wintour, Arianna Huffington, Elettra Rosellini Weidemann and jeweller,
Monique Pan, joined forces to discuss the importance of health in the
fashion industry ? particularly when it comes to models and the
pressures placed upon their figures.

Ms Weidemann, 28, the model-turned-restauranteur daughter of Isabella Rosellini, told MailOnline that the team discussed healthy eating, eating disorders and the importance of a balanced approach to a career in modelling.

'It's important to develop an identity outside of the industry,' she said, adding that 'self-definition' for models should not be all about the modelling world. Whether it's art, music or studying, she said that models should have a back-up plan to help them realise there is more to life than the job.

She said that runway modelling tends to be the preserve of the younger models and to that end, she spoke to the panel about the need for a mentor ? in her case, her father ? to provide grounding and inspiration.

The forum follows the release of a set of health guidelines by the CFDA at the end of January.

A memo from Diane von Furstenberg, chair of the Council, stipulated, among other points, that designers should 'supply healthy meals, snacks, and water backstage and at shoots and provide nutrition and fitness education' and 'promote a healthy backstage environment by raising the awareness of the
impact of smoking and tobacco-related disease among women, ensuring a
smoke-free environment, and address underage drinking by prohibiting
alcohol.'

Mexico cartels paid $4.5 million political bribes: court (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? Mexican drug cartels paid $4.5 million in bribes to buy protection and political favors in a state run by the country's main opposition party, U.S. court documents said on Friday, as the party leads polls to win the presidency in July.

The money-laundering case in Texas charges Antonio Pena, arrested on Wednesday, with funneling cash from the feared Zetas cartel to officials in the state of Tamaulipas, according to documents from the U.S. District Court in San Antonio, Texas.

A sworn affidavit from an undercover agent at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration names former Tamaulipas Governor Tomas Yarrington of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), as having a direct personal relationship with Zeta leaders.

A DEA undercover source "described Antonio Pena as a conduit between Mexican politicians, in particular Tomas Yarrington, and Zeta members Miguel Trevino and Heriberto Lazcano," according to the documents, available on U.S. court database PACER.

Lazcano and Trevino are the leaders of the cartel, which is notorious for decapitations and kidnappings across Mexico.

Yarrington, in office from 1999 to 2005, is under investigation separately in Mexico along with two other ex-governors of the state, which the PRI has ruled since the party's foundation.

The centrist PRI has said the probe is politically motivated ahead of the hotly contested July 1 presidential vote.

The federal attorney-general's office confirmed the investigation but declined to give further details. Mexican media have reported authorities are searching for evidence the politicians are linked to money laundering.

The accusations have given President Felipe Calderon's ruling conservative National Action Party, or PAN, fresh ammunition against the PRI, which ruled Mexico for seven decades until it was ousted in 2000.

Yarrington did not immediately reply to requests for comment. He said via a Twitter account on January 30 that his name had appeared on an alert blocking his travel outside of Mexico.

"I hope that the authorities clarify the motive and scope of this action," his Twitter account said.

The PRI is hoping its youthful presidential candidate Enrique Pena Nieto, who has a big lead in opinion polls, will bring a new face to the party, still remembered by some Mexican voters for corruption and vote buying during 70 years in power.

HORRIFIC VIOLENCE

Members of Calderon's PAN have accused the PRI of negotiating in the past with organized crime, a charge the party vehemently denies.

PAN party chairman Gustavo Madero responded to the Yarrington report by urging a thorough investigation of alleged links between the PRI and organized crime.

"Our concern isn't political posturing, it's an appeal to the conscience of those governing to think again, because this is putting the lives and well-being of all Mexicans at risk," he said in a televised statement.

The PAN's popularity has suffered since the government launched a frontal attack on the cartels five years ago. Since then, more than 47,000 people have died in Mexico as turf wars between the gangs over lucrative smuggling routes intensified.

The Zetas, who began as the armed wing of the Gulf cartel but split off from their former employers, have been blamed for some of the most horrific acts of violence, including the massacre of 72 migrants in Tamaulipas in 2010.

In the Texas court case document, Yarrington is mentioned several times.

"This relationship started with the election of Governor Tomas Yarrington and continued with the placement of other PRI candidates in government positions throughout Tamaulipas who could ensure favorable protection for the cartels," the testimony said.

The DEA agent says Yarrington met with Pena on various occasions in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and the United States.

The testimony also cites another confidential source who said he delivered $500,000 in drug proceeds from the Gulf cartel to Pena when he was an associate of the mayor of Nuevo Laredo in 2002.

John Ackerman, a political analyst at the National

Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), said the government should have begun probes into the ex-governors much earlier.

It chose not to because the PAN needed opposition support in Congress due to its lack of a majority, he added.

"This is not a witch hunt, this is the reality: governors and government officials in this country are involved with drug dealers," he said. "They are not clean, neither those from PRI nor the PAN."
