Cold weather swamps AAA, mechanics

CLEVELAND - AAA Cleveland was swamped Wednesday and expects another busy morning and afternoon Thursday.

By late Wednesday morning, they had handled more than 500 calls for service, including drivers need tows, and help with dead batteries and flat tires

By 3 p.m., AAA Cleveland had already handled more than 1,100 calls, which is very high considering many people are still off work and school from the holidays.

AAA handles about 900 calls on a typical winter day in Cleveland, but expects to handle close to a 24-hour total of 18,000 calls by the end of Wednesday.

Downtown Safeway Tire and Car Care mechanic Chuck Pulaski is also very busy this week with some of the coldest air in two years digging into Cleveland.?

"Cold will discharge your battery and make it so it doesn't start the vehicle, but it can usually be saved with a charge. But heat in the summer will destroy the components of a weak battery and make it unusable," Pulaski said.

Getting your battery tested and recharged for about 25 bucks can keep your battery going during the winter.

Pulaski said you should have your battery charged after three years and buy a new one after five years. A good car battery costs about $150, Pulaski said.

This cold weather also impacts tires.

"For every 10 degrees of temperature drop, you lose a pound of air pressure. So if you set the tire pressure when it?s 60 degrees and it drops to 20 degrees you've lost four pounds of air pressure right there. So tires sit lower and they run hotter and you?re more likely to blow a tire," Pulaski said.

AAA advised that if you do break down on the side of the road put your hood up, open your trunk and stay in your vehicle until help arrives that way other drivers will notice you're broken down and you're car is less likely to be struck by another vehicle.

Generic color switch tied to not taking pills

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People seem less likely to take their medications if the pill color changes between prescriptions, which can happen when switching from a brand-name to generic drug, says a new study.

"I have a lot of experience when patients of mine come and say, ?I was taking a green pill and now it's pink. What's going on?'" said Dr. Aaron Kesselheim, the study's lead author from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

That confusion may lead to patients being unsure about their medications and end with them not taking the drugs, write the researchers in JAMA Internal Medicine, formerly known as the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The researchers used a national database of medical claims from the early 2000s to compare people who got their seizure drugs refilled on time to those who did not.

Overall, they had information on about 61,000 people who were taking one of eight drugs, which were offered in 37 colors and four shapes.

The researchers found that changes in pill color between prescriptions rarely occurred, but there was a difference between those who filled their orders and those who did not.

Of the approximately 11,500 people who did not fill their prescriptions, 1.2 percent had their drugs change color. That compared to 0.97 percent of people who got their prescriptions filled on time.

Kesselheim admitted the raw numbers are "pretty small," but he said they can add up.

"Patients fill medications multiple times a month? The chance of these changes happening gets to be much higher," he said, adding that even a small gap between prescriptions can spell trouble for seizure patients.

As for the shape of the pill changing between prescriptions, that was an even more rare event and did not seem to be linked to people skipping medicine.

Also, the researchers can't prove a change in a pill's color stopped someone from filling their prescription or if it was something else, such as a doctor discontinuing the drug.

?SENSELESS AND ABSURD'

"If they are taking nine medicines, they get at least 36 ?opportunities' a year to experience a color change. This seemingly small risk then starts to appear very substantial," wrote Dr. Kenneth Covinsky, associate editor of JAMA Internal Medicine, in a note accompanying the study.

Covinsky adds that it's "absolutely senseless and absurd" to expose patients to that risk. "Equivalent generic medicines should be required to look like their brand-name counterparts," he writes.

Currently, the U.S. allows cheaper generic drugs to be sold to patients after a brand-name counterpart's market exclusivity ends. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says those generics must be essentially as effective as the brand-name drugs, but may be different colors, shapes and sizes.

One reason for the same drug having different appearances is that brand-name manufacturers may claim legal ownership of their drugs' physical appearances.

"A patient taking five medicines, each produced by five generic manufacturers, theoretically faces over 3,000 possible arrays of pill appearances for what are, chemically and clinically speaking, the same drugs," write the study's authors.

In a statement to Reuters Health, the Generic Pharmaceutical Association, which represents generic drug manufacturers and distributors, said they are committed to working with the FDA to ensure their products meet all quality standards and are safe, effective and accessible to all patients who need them.

"We manufacture our products and receive approval from the FDA based on consistency with the regulations and standards established by the FDA," said the statement.

In an accompanying editorial, Lawrence Yu and Dr. Gregory Geba of the FDA's Office of Generic Drugs write that they've started to include a drug's physical appearance in reviews.

"It will be interesting to see how the results of the authors' study? will compare with studies of other drug classes," they add.

Kesselheim said that until there is a better solution, it's important for patients to know that a pill's clinical impact doesn't change just because it looks different.

Growing up around Sex Addiction: Impact on Children Part 2 | The ...

Family dysfunction

Sex addiction in a parent means there is family dysfunction and sexual dysfunction in the environment of the child. This in turn impacts families and places children at risk for many problems including sex addiction as adults.

Researchers have reported that:

?Even when the children are not fully aware of the parent?s abnormal sexual behavior, they may eventually replicate it themselves.?

Sex addiction in a family does not automatically mean that the children will grow up to be addicts but it does increase the possibility of the child experiencing abuse or trauma in a number of ways.

What counts as abuse?

Children require nurturing, validation, love and support.? Anything less qualifies as to some extent abusive.? The following is a compilation?of examples of child abuse that I think gives the idea of how broad the concept should be.

  • Forcing a child to kiss or hug other people
  • Criticizing child?s sexual development
  • Attacking a child?s thinking process
  • Making a child the butt of any joke
  • Screaming or shouting at a child
  • Imposing unfair punishments
  • Slapping or hitting a child
  • Not allowing a child privacy
  • Degrading or insulting a child
  • Forcing a child to keep secrets
  • Demanding perfection from a child
  • Blaming a child for family problems
  • Failure to provide supervision or security
  • Punishing a child?s normal sexual curiosity

Experiences of adults who grew up with a sex addict

A survey published in 1997 found that the vast majority of adult children of sex addicts reported the following problems:

As a child:

  • Given harmful information about sex instead of appropriate, accurate or useful information
  • Experienced shame of confusion about body, gender, and sexuality.
  • Sex tended to be viewed in extremes: all important and/or dirty, disgusting or naughty.
  • Disrespectful behaviors or remarks about gender and sexuality were common.
  • Lack of nourishing touch.

As an adult:

  • Experienced confusion, discomfort, or terror in the face of sexuality.
  • Had difficulties in establishing intimate relationships.
  • Experienced fear or shame when I acted in healthy sexual ways.
  • Misidentified the role of sex in relationships, using sex to avoid abandonment, control others or fill emptiness.
  • Confused sex with emotional intimacy.

The subtle messages and sexual violation

Some of the most common and most damaging experiences of a child growing up with a sex addict parent are not as obvious as physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

Some of the damaging dynamics that are present in families with a sex addict parent include:

An atmosphere of secrecy and duplicity about sex?

These families often have rigid, moralistic attitudes about sex along side hidden parental behaviors that contradict these attitudes.? This conveys the message that sexuality is shameful and should be kept compartmentalized.

Subtle sexualizing messages

These are likely to involve comments about the young person?s body or sexual development or attractiveness, inappropriate sexual humor etc.? The child is being condition to see him/herself in sexual terms.

Absence of a normal model of intimate relating?

This can take many forms but often parents are in conflict, do not show affection toward one another, or are disengaged and distracted by marital conflicts.

Witnessing inappropriate behavior on the part of the addict?

The child may come across pornography at an early age or may accidentally witness the addict engaged in some sexual behavior.? This is confusing and probably traumatic.

In addition to the risk of family disruption due to separation and divorce, one study found that cybersex addiction placed children at risk for:

  • Exposure to cyberporn and to objectification of women
  • Involvement in parental conflicts
  • Lack of attention because of the addict?s involvement with the computer and the partner?s preoccupation with the addict

Many adults with sex and relationship problems do not initially see their parents as having been abnormal.? Young children have nothing to compare their parents? behavior to. And children instinctively want to bond with their parents and need to believe in them. Part of the recovery work for everyone is taking a more objective look at what it was like growing up and coming to understand the emotional effects of what we experienced.

Luxury Cars End Year With a Sales Bang, Despite Fiscal Cliff

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

?

Car sales in the U.S. climbed 9 percent in December, closing what turned out to be the strongest year since 2007. But equally notably, luxury car sales constituted sixteen percent of sales in December, representing a larger portion than in years past.

?

A Los Angeles Times article suggests that year-end executive bonuses usually help boost luxury car sales towards the end of the year, but 2012's strong performance comes from buyers who appear "unfazed by the current level of economic uncertainty generated by the fiscal cliff negotiations."

?

While high-end manufacturers are duking it out with incentive programs intended to help edge out competitors for the sales crown, an analyst at LMC Automotive also suggests the big picture is looking up, as well. "The only major roadblock ahead for the U.S. market is the fiscal cliff. Assuming that hurdle is cleared, 2013 is one step closer to a stable and sustainable growth rate for autos."

?

As for the age-old race for luxury manufacturers, 2012 will be decided by a photo finish for the top two spots: at last count, Mercedes-Benz was winning by a hair with 245,910 vehicles sold so far, and BMW was a close second, with 244,061. Holding a distant third place is former powerhouse Lexus, with 213,559 cars sold so far since the beginning of the year.

Venezuela to usher in New Year with vigil for ailing Hugo Chavez

AFP

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez speaking during a press conference in Caracas on Oct. 9.

By Mary Murray, NBC News

It will be a quiet New Year?s Eve in Venezuela.

Tens of thousands people on Monday were expected to cram Plaza Bolivar, a beautiful square in the center of Caracas, where an annual celebration featuring top bands and free food is held. Vendors were already set up to sell trinkets to the crowd.

But in a last minute change, Jacqueline Far?a, head of the Capital District governing Caracas, canceled the free concert that rings in the new year, calling instead for Venezuelans to "unite in prayer" for ailing Venezuelan president Hugo Ch?vez and to include his "prompt recovery" among their wishes for 2013.

On Monday afternoon, Venezuela state television began airing a live Catholic mass for Chavez that was being held at the Palacio de Miraflores, the building that houses presidential work offices. Meantime, the Ministry of Communications was organizing a massive prayer meeting at San Francisco Church at 5 p.m.?(4:30 p.m. ET) and other Chavez supporters were planning a political rally at 6 p.m. at Plaza Bolivar.

On Sunday night, Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro delivered a somber address to the nation from Havana, Cuba, where Chavez, 58, remains hospitalized after his fourth operation for an undisclosed form of cancer.

Maduro, flanked by one of Chavez?s daughters Rosa Virginia and her husband, Science Minister Jorge Arreaza, read a prepared statement revealing that the Venezuelan president is now suffering "new complications" stemming from a respiratory infection he contracted after an operation on Dec. 11.

Archival video: Venezuela's controversial president Hugo Chavez -- who makes no secret of his dislike for the US -- was re-elected to an unprecedented third term, fending off a serious challenge to win decisively, 54 to 45 percent. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports from Caracas. October, 2012.

These problems developed on top of profuse bleeding Chavez experienced during the six-hour surgery in Havana. Chavez has been battling cancer for the past 18 months ? flying to Cuba for surgery as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Maduro indicated that Chavez was conscious and able to speak, dispelling rumors circulating earlier in the day that claimed Chavez was only breathing with the help of a respirator and close to death.

Sept. 20: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took his verbal battle with the United States to the floor of the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, calling President Bush "the devil." NBC's David Gregory reports.

"Just a few minutes ago we were with President Chavez," said Maduro. "We greeted each other and he himself talked about these complications."

Again Sunday evening, Maduro described Chavez?s condition as "delicate" and with "risks" while warning the nation to prepare for difficult times. Chavez has not been seen since his surgery three weeks ago and no additional information on his condition has appeared in Cuba?s state-run media.

"We trust that the avalanche of love and solidarity with Comandante Chavez, together with his immense will to live and the care of the best medical specialists, will help our president win this new battle," Maduro said.

For the moment, Maduro remains in Havana and said he was spending time with Chavez's medical team and relatives.
