More Michigan Bills Target Union Dues, Operations

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Eliminating a tax that businesses pay on machinery and other equipment is a top legislative priority this year for the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.

The organization representing business interests said Tuesday that the tax puts Michigan at a competitive disadvantage with other states.

Republicans who lead the Michigan Legislature also proposed repealing or phasing out the personal property tax. But a key question is how or whether to replace the more than $1 billion the tax raises each year for local governments and schools.

The Michigan chamber also is pushing for road and transportation system improvements this year. Other priorities include a state budget with no general tax increases, an improved regulatory climate and market-oriented solutions to health care issues.

Right-to-work laws aren't listed as a chamber priority.
