Extra London flights for Kerry

Thursday, August 23, 2012

Extra flights providing an improved daily service from Kerry to London are expected to boost tourism in the South-West.

Currently, there is one daily Kerry-Luton flight and four weekly Kerry-Stansted flights.

However, the Kerry-Stansted service will operate daily, including weekends, from Nov 7.

Ryanair services from Kerry Airport to London currently account for about half of the airport?s total passenger numbers.

"The three additional flights per week will be hugely significant for Kerry Airport," an airport spokesman said yesterday.

"Up to now, people might have to lose a day?s work on a Friday to catch a flight but, from November, they will be able to depart London later on Friday evening and get a flight back at a later time on Sunday night.

"With increased emigration, there are lots of Kerry people working in London, while a lot of tourists also use our London services."

Kerry-London services, which operate at 85% passenger capacity, are among the airport?s most successful.

Last year, the airport saw a ?3m fall in revenue and a 19% passenger decline.

In spite of the recession, however, passenger numbers grew on the London route.

The overall decline in passengers was attributed largely to the withdrawal of Ryanair from the Kerry-Dublin route, since replaced by Aer Arann.

The daily Kerry-Dublin service is seen as essential for the future of the airport.

Vitally, the Dublin link enables people to get onward flight connections to other destinations.
