Egyptians in hajj divided over Islam in politics

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Now that she has finished the hajj and is returning home to Egypt, Magda Bagnied says her family will no doubt try to convince her to put on the headscarf to demonstrate her religiosity after a pilgrimage meant to cleanse her of sin and bring her closer to God.

She fully expects that from her parents. But she doesn't want that kind of pressure from her government or leaders.

"Leave religion to the people," said Bagnied, a media professor at Ahram Canadian University, in Cairo's suburbs.

The annual pilgrimage to Islam's holiest sites offers Muslims a chance to reaffirm their faith and root themselves more firmly in their beliefs. It comes at a time when several Arab nations are facing a similar issue on a political level after uprisings that toppled longtime leaders and brought Islamists to greater power: The question of how much a government should be rooted in Islam.

Egypt in particular is struggling with that question. Elections since the fall last year of Hosni Mubarak elevated Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood, to president. The Brotherhood was vaulted to become the country's strongest political force, along with even more conservative Islamists known as Salafis, who follow a strict Saudi-style interpretation of Islam.

As pilgrims were making their way around the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure in Mecca that observant Muslims pray toward five times a day, and performing an elaborate set of rituals in Saudi Arabia over the past week, Egypt was in a bitter struggle over the writing of the new constitution.

Salafis are pressing for the document to explicitly root Egypt's laws in Shariah. That has raised liberals' fears that it will bring stricter implementation of Islamic law and empower Muslim clerics in a political role, limiting women's rights and freedoms of worship and expression. The assembly writing the constitution is dominated by the Brotherhood and Salafis.

The Egyptians who performed the pilgrimage this year may be united in the importance they give to their faith in their lives. But it doesn't mean they all agree on the mix of religion and politics. More than 90,000 Egyptians were on the pilgrimage, which largely wrapped up on Monday. They hailed from all segments of Egyptian society, the rich and the poor, and from all corners of the Arab world's most populous nation.

Wearing the seamless terrycloth garments worn by male pilgrims to symbolize equality and unity during hajj, Sayid Zeid said Egypt's constitution should represent all Egyptians ? and, he added, it must be based on the Quran.

How can it be both, given the large Christian minority and the sector of liberal Muslims?

"Shariah will be applied by God ... It should be applied as it came down from God," said Zeid, who is a reporter with Egypt's state TV, though he was performing the hajj, not covering it.

For some, it seemed only natural that Islamic law would benefit a Muslim-majority nation, putting aside questions of who would interpret it or implement it.

Making his way to midday prayers at Mecca's Grand Mosque, which houses the Kaaba, Abdel-Muntalib el-Fikky said there is no reason to fear Shariah or the Islamists.

"Why are we all here? We are all here for God," he said of the pilgrims. "Our constitution, God willing, will be good. It will move us forward."

Anwar Saad, a 32 year-old teacher from Egypt's Beheira province, stood on Jabal al-Rahma in Mount Arafat, in the desert outside Mecca during a rite of prayer on Thursday that many feel is the pinnacle moment of hajj.

"The Brotherhood have moderate views. They are not conservative like the Salafis. We hope they will apply a moderate form of Shariah for Egypt," he said. "We want God to help Morsi succeed ... There were 30 years of corruption and this will not be fixed in 100 days. Be patient with the president."

Notably, hajj itself shows the variety in interpretations of Islamic rules. For example, in most of the Muslim world, men and women are segregated during prayers. But in the Grand Mosque, the two sexes pray side by side. For most of the hajj rites, women are not allowed to wear the veil that covers the entire face, even though ultraconservative Muslims insist a woman's face should be hidden from males not related to her.

Bagnied, the media professor, said she does not fear Shariah but those who would try to interpret and apply it.

"What kind of Islam do they want to apply? Afghanistan, Iran or Saudi Arabia?" she said. Bagnied, who does not wear the headscarf that many Egyptian Muslim women don to cover their hair, said she can resist her family's urging her to start wearing it. But she worries that an Islamist government will start to apply political pressure as well on such personal choices.

She said many people voted for Morsi hoping that because he is a pious Muslim and will apply "God's law" that their lives will improve.

"I think many Egyptians don't know the content of the constitution," she said. "Egypt is full of people talking about politics, but there is a large amount of ignorance in the country and you can convince people (by using Islam) that they have to obey their leaders, who are sheiks and politicians."

Ihab Abdel-Aal, 47, is among those who voted for the former Mubarak regime-era official who ran against Morsi in the past summer's presidential race. Morsi won by just over half the vote. Abdel-Aal has performed the hajj more than 25 times, since he's a tour operator bringing other Egyptians on the pilgrimage.

He fears Egypt is turning to a theocracy.

"Democracy and freedom are new to Egypt," he said. "There should be no religion in politics and no politics in religion."

Abdel-Aal, like many who work in Egypt's vital tourism industry that was hard-hit due to political turmoil over the past year, said he believes Shariah cannot be applied in all aspects of life.

"This will tank the economy and other sectors and just won't work."

Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, who runs a Cairo tourism company, says he has performed hajj more than 30 times. He said the number of Egyptians wanting to perform hajj and umrah, the smaller pilgrimage to Mecca, increased this year.

"In any crisis, the first thing a person does is pray to God," he said. "We are in a crisis."

CRESH Seminar 6th Nov: Air Pollution Kills! So What? Air Quality ...

CRESH Seminar Announcement

Air Pollution Kills! So What? Air Quality Engineering to Improve Public Health

Julian Marshall

Department of Civil Engineering

University of Minnesota

When? 11-12pm?Tues 6th November

Where? Hutton Room (3.18), Institute of Geography, Drummond St, Edinburgh

Abstract
The World Health Organization estimates that urban air pollution is one of the top 15 causes of death globally (one of the top 10 causes in high-income countries), responsible for ~ 1.7% of deaths annual (high-income countries, 2.1%).?How can we reduce those health effects? This presentation will discuss three investigations into that question. (1) Urban form describes the physical layout of an urban area ? for example, city shape, population density, and ?patchiness? of urban growth. We have found that air pollution is related to urban form, for cities in the US and internationally, raising the question of whether urban planning can help cities meet air quality goals. (2) In low-income countries, indoor air can be especially polluted, owing to combustion of solid fuels for heating and cooking. In a rural village in Karnataka, India, we conducted a randomized control trial of a higher-efficiency stove, to test whether the stove improves indoor air pollution, health effects, and climate-relevant emissions. (3) Prior research emphasizes the health benefits of active travel (walking, biking). Can urban planning increase active travel without worsening exposure to air pollution? We explore spatial patterns in risks from those two factors (physical inactivity; and exposure to air pollution). A constant theme through these topics is environmental justice: which groups have higher exposures to air pollution, and how exposure correlates with demographic attributes such as race and income.

Peanuts creator Charles Schulz made a habit of dispensing advice through the mouths of cartoon characters, especially the blanket-carrying Linus van Pelt.? GP2.jpg

?

Like any offering of counsel, some of it is to be heeded and some of it is not.

?

?There are three things you must never discuss with people,? the comic strip?s philosopher/theologian once said, ?religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin.?

?

Since we regularly wade into the first two topics anyway, we might as well go for broke and address the latter.

?

Sort of.

?

The traditions surrounding October 31st conjure up many good memories for me. Over the years, my wife and I have chosen to allow our sons to engage in the innocent and harmless side of Halloween. They enjoy dressing up in positive-themed costumes (Captain America, for example) and going trick-or-treating around the neighborhood.

?

I understand that Halloween is a hot topic with many Christians, and understandably so. With its admittedly pagan and creepy origins, involving druids, ghosts and goblins, many choose to either ignore it altogether or amend it in order to have it better complement their convictions.

?

I take no issue with either side and respect the strongly held perspectives in both camps. Halloween5.jpg

?

Instead, I want to address the broader culture concerning the holiday.

?

Here are my thoughts:

?

Christian or not, it is high time to turn away from the dark, gory and horror-filled side of the holiday. It?s always been time, but the confluence of culture and recent current events raises this matter to a new level.

?

There is absolutely nothing entertaining or redeeming about hatchet wielding villains parading in costume or front-lawn displays featuring blood spattered body parts.

?

Some might suggest I need to lighten up and relax, to not take intended fantasy so seriously.?

?

?It is all just a joke,? they say. ?It isn?t real.?

?

Or is it?

?

Those people who press will have to forgive me. My family and I live, pray and play in Colorado. Just a few days ago police arrested a 17-year-old for murdering and dismembering a ten-year-old girl. Parts of her body were reportedly found in the murderer?s house.

?

How can hearts break in two at such horrific news ? and yet grow indifferent to the site of a ghoulish Halloween display just blocks away? Halloween77.jpg

?

There is nothing ?fun? about a sinister-looking character, strapped from head to toe with plastic automatic rifles, casing the streets ? even with a bag full of candy in hand on Halloween night.

?

You?ll remember that it was earlier this summer that a young man, who allegedly called himself the ?Joker,? burst into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, and opened-fire, injuring over 50 people and killing 13.

?

It seems that life is increasingly imitating ?art? these days ? but it?s too-often the heinous kind, not the glorious or good.

?

Evil has been on the loose since the beginning of time, and dispensing with evil-themed Halloween traditions won?t change the reality of a broken world.

?

I get it.

?

But can?t we agree that it?s unwise and unhealthy to embrace wickedness in any fictitious form?

?

As a culture we can find common ground with parents of every creed concerning the need to lift up the good and turn away from macabre traditions.?

Nature slams campaigns into real world

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Suddenly, after drifting through months of confusing finger-pointing and iffy economic theory, the presidential candidates are getting walloped by an all-too-tangible October surprise. Superstorm Sandy is a real-world, gut-level test.

The force of nature has nearly halted campaigning just as President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney were charging into a final week of man-made rancor.

"It's sort of like Mother Nature is intervening and calling a timeout," said historian and presidential biographer Douglas Brinkley.

Obama can't afford to be caught taking his eyes off an unfolding crisis. Romney can't risk appearing callous about the threat to lives and homes. And, seven years after Hurricane Katrina, neither candidate wants to talk about the political implications of the storm stomping up the East Coast.

But their campaigns have to think about it. All presidential teams sweat about the potential for an October surprise ? a late-in-the race event or disclosure that can turn the race upside down. And there's never been one quite like this.

Whether or not its destruction lives up to the warnings, the storm will have political impact. At the very least, it will dominate the news and distract a nation of voters during the crucial handful of days that remain before Nov. 6.

And the more concrete effects on Election Day are yet to be tallied: how many early voting days lost, how many voters who don't make it to the polls because of power outages, damaged homes or cleanup duties, whether any polling places or election equipment are damaged. Four states seen as pivotal to this election were hit ? North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Though rapid-fire campaign ads continue apace, Brinkley predicted that the presidential race's tone has been muted for good. Like a death, a natural disaster comes with a proper mourning period. He thinks that will bring a gentler tone over the next week, even after campaign schedules return to full strength.

"When the nation's largest city and even its capital are endangered, when so many people are in peril and face deprivation," Brinkley said, "it's hard to get back to arguing over taxes."

For Obama, the federal response to the natural disaster could make or break his bid for a second term. Romney is left without much to do but wait out the storm, while precious moments are lost in his push to move ahead in the few tight state races expected to decide the election.

"It stops the campaign more or less dead in its tracks," said Republican pollster and strategist Mike McKenna, who doesn't work for the Romney campaign. "A pause always helps the guys on defense. It helps the Obama guys catch their breath a little bit and think about what to do next."

McKenna says Romney shouldn't take much time off and should instead focus on key states outside the storm zone.

"If I were Romney, I'd be in Colorado and Michigan and Wisconsin," McKenna said. "Start off with a prayer for the people in New York and New Jersey, definitely do that, but don't stop attacking. Try to keep your momentum through this."

For Obama, missing a few days of active campaigning for vital presidential duties may be a good trade, politically speaking.

Lingering anger about the previous president's performance when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans provides a backdrop that will benefit Obama if his administration does a solid job, said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center.

"You gain much more as a president being contrasted with George W. Bush and Hurricane Katrina then you do giving a speech in some battleground state and getting on the evening news as a campaigner," Jamieson said.

She said a natural disaster gives the sitting president "unlimited access to the media to say things the public wants and needs to hear in a fashion that reinforces that he is president."

The 2008 election also was hit by a fall surprise, albeit one of human creation? the plummeting stock market and near collapse of the nation's financial sector that September. Many voters blamed that on the Republicans in power, and it helped Obama capture the presidency.

This time, neither candidate can be blamed for failing to prevent the weather. But Obama's reputation will suffer if the federal government's response is feeble or botched.

There may be little time to make such assessments, however, and a risk of appearing to politicize tragedy if Romney speaks up too soon ? a complaint that Democrats lodged against him when a U.S. Consulate in Libya was attacked.

"Criticism could boomerang if it appears to be ginned up to win votes in the election as opposed to genuine concern that people were not protected or people were not helped," said Mitchell McKinney, a professor of political communication at the University of Kansas.

For the former Massachusetts governor, with no political office as a platform, finding a strong, positive role in the storm response is difficult. Romney used a campaign event Monday at a high school gym in Avon Lake, Ohio, to make a plea for donations to the Red Cross, before stopping campaigning temporarily in solidarity with storm victims. His campaign offices in storm-hit areas were collecting emergency supplies.

Even on Monday, as Obama canceled an appearance in Florida and rushed back to Washington to oversee the storm response, first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden kept campaigning.

"In times of crisis, we all pull together as one American family," Mrs. Obama told supporters at a campaign event in Iowa City, Iowa, before launching into an upbeat summation of her husband's accomplishments and goals.

The president and Romney also spoke of Americans helping each other.

"President Obama is doing the right thing. Romney, too," said Democratic political strategist Donna Brazile. "Most Americans know what the closing arguments are by now. Let's focus on taking care of each other."

We Can Make a Law about That | Criminal Law News

When Casey Anthony was acquitted of murder charges in 2011, many people around the world expressed their outrage. Anthony?s two year old daughter Caylee was missing for 31 days before Anthony reported anything to the police, and this led most people to the conclusion that Anthony must have been responsible in some way for the toddler?s death. The legal system may not have found enough evidence to convict Anthony, but the resulting outcry led New York assemblywoman Grace Meng to propose a timely reporting law. Meng?s proposal, nicknamed Caylee?s Law, was the first of many throughout the United States.

Why is Grace Meng?s Bill Controversial??

Meng?s proposal noted that there is currently no legislation in place within the state of New York that mandates when a parent must notify the authorities that a child is missing. The introduction of a timely reporting bill has gained a lot of support from the general public, but lawmakers have been hesitant to get involved. The major issue from a lawmaker?s perspective is that Meng?s proposal does not define what timely means. If the bill were to pass as written, the definition of timely reporting would be left up to individual judges and juries to decide on a case by case basis. This raises a huge list of legal concerns, and it practically guarantees that people will not be treated the same, even in virtually identical circumstances.

Other Proposed Versions of Caylee?s Law

Although Meng?s bill has gotten most of the media and political attention, it is not the only bill that was introduced in New York as a result of the Casey Anthony trial. Senator Andrew Lanza also introduced a Caylee?s Law bill that gave specific guidelines for timeliness. Rather than leaving it up to interpretation, Lanza asked for a 24 hour window. According to the proposed law, if a parent fails to notify the authorities within 24 hours of a child?s disappearance, they will be charged with a class E Felony.

The verdict in the Casey Anthony trial caused lawmakers in sixteen other states to introduce their own version of Caylee?s Law. Seven of these states, including Florida, have enacted the law to date. All of the bills were at least partially based on Meng?s original bill, but most of the states have defined timely as 24 hours. Penalties vary greatly from state to state, and critics have been vocal about some of the potential issues that these laws can create.

Why do Some People Oppose Caylee?s Law?

Several of the opponents of Caylee?s Law contend that it is unconstitutional and violates the 5th Amendment. There are also controversial aspects to the law in some states that may cause truly innocent parents to serve jail time. For example, in many places the law requires parents to report the disappearance or death of their child within 24 hours, but it does not differentiate between causes of death. Due to this, a parent could technically be charged with a felony if they fail to immediately report to the police a death that occurs in a hospital due to an illness.

Why are 10 States Still Debating the Law?

Of the 17 states that have seen proposed versions of Caylee?s Law, only seven of them have moved forward. The other 10 states, including New York, are tied up in the legal debate over what timely means and what age group the law should apply to. Although Wisconsin passed the bill with the timely passage still in place, most state lawmakers are adamant about defining the word timely before moving forward.

NYSE plans to open as usual Monday

NEW YORK (AP) ? The New York Stock Exchange plans to open for trading as usual Monday, even as Hurricane Sandy barrels its way up the Atlantic.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said New York City's subways and buses will shut down Sunday evening. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered residents to evacuate some low-lying areas Sunday and said city public schools will close Monday.

But the stock exchanges expect to open for regular hours. The Nasdaq OMX Group reportedly also plans to remain open. A call to a Nasdaq spokesman was not immediately returned.

The CME Group, which owns the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the New York Mercantile Exchange, plans to shut its trading floor in New York Monday ? which is located in a mandatory evacuation zone ? but it said all electronic markets will open at their regularly scheduled times.

If Hurricane Sandy knocks out power for lower Manhattan, the NYSE can switch to its backup power generators for electricity. The servers that handle the exchange's transactions are housed in Mahwah, N.J.

Trading has rarely stopped for weather. A blizzard led to a late start and an early close on Jan. 8, 1996, according to the exchange's parent company, NYSE Euronext. The NYSE shut down on March 27, 1985 for Hurricane Gloria.

Since the Great Depression, the longest suspension in trading at the NYSE occurred after the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2011, when the exchange closed for four days.

Hurricane Sandy was headed north from the Caribbean, on course to meet a snowstorm and a cold front. Experts said the rare hybrid storm could cause havoc over 800 miles stretching from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

Simplify your life {Week 44: Holidays ... - Home Life Simplified

Last week we set out our intentions for the holiday season. This week we will start to plan and organise so your holiday period can be filled with fun and happiness rather than stress and tantrums.

I am going to lay out some questions for you to go through and get you thinking about what you want to do. There are quite a few great free planning printables out there which I rounded up last week. As with household binders?printables?the key is to only use what you need ? just because someone makes a printable does not mean you need it. Part of keeping things simple is knowing where to draw the line with organising tools and getting on with things. If a list in your phone or day planner will work for you then do that even if it is not pretty.

Before you get to the step of writing your to do lists and shopping lists and more we need to ask some questions and be intentional again.

Look at previous years and make notes

What recipes were a hit (or a flop)?

How was your timing (did you do too much last minute, was your lead up frazzled)?

Think about your home and how it served you if you hosted any festivities (do you need more supplies? chairs? do you need to host outside your home if your group has grown?)

Talk to your family and involve them

What does each person love the most and insist on doing (this helps if you are thinking of cutting back and select letting go of something (say the whole advent activities tradition), but it turns out that is the one thing your son looks forward to each year)

Get any feedback on what they would love to try this year or what they did not like last year.

Have realistic expectations

Try to remember your intentions and how you hope to feel [link here]. Try to remember that a holiday is not wonderful simply because you baked four dozen cookies or hand made every gift. What is the holiday about for you? Remember that and let yourself off the hook for anything that is not going to add to your holiday experience. If it causes a knot in your stomach pause and rethink it.

Your challenge this week is to think about the above and look at the list below and start planning for the holidays you celebrate. If you look at this now you have plenty of time so don?t feel pressured. Just start making notes and chatting with your family and then start to put a plan into place for what you need to do in the coming weeks.

  1. Think about what events / activities you will host? what will you attend? any volunteering or donations to coordinate?
  2. Look at your decorations ? what do you have? what do you need?
  3. Mark everything you commit to into your diary, a calendar or your phone. You might want to print off some blank calendar sheets for November and December to keep handy and plan with.
  4. Plan your menus ? whether you are hosting family meals, friends or simply need to get the shopping done before the supermarkets close for the holiday you will want to be organised with your food and household supplies.
  5. Once you have your meals planned think about your shopping list, cooking order (anything you can do in advance to make it easier), what is anyone else contributing (tick it off your list), pre-order your turkey / ham/seafood if needed.
  6. Holiday cards ? if you give/send them make a list of who you will send them to, gather addresses, start writing them. My tip is to organise this early and count up how many stamps you need and buy them before December gets busy and the post office lines are long. I don?t write the cards straight away, but I have all my postage ready for overseas and Australian cards.
  7. Make a gift list ? ideas, budget, stores to visit, online sites you can shop from, donations of presents and food, ?include a few simple gifts to keep on hand for last minute hostess gifts or gift exchanges.
  8. Plan advent activities if you have this tradition. I have shared before my list of advent ideas as I do a combination of gifts, books, food, crafts, activities and outings. If you want to start this tradition I shared a round up of advent calendar ideas.
  9. Wrap gifts ? purchase gift wrap, bags, bows, ribbon ? whatever you like to do stock up in advance so you don?t have to hit the shops at the last minute. Any leftovers can be used next year. When possible take advantage of free gift wrapping at stores or gold coin donation / fundraisers services in shopping malls.
  10. Think about the extras: holiday music (CDs and download), any special clothes for events, supplies for guests you may be hosting, any odd jobs you need to do to get your home ready for guests.

Religious fanaticism ruining lives - The Standard

Thank you for giving me space to express my utter disgust with religious fanaticism and intolerance.

I have always, throughout my life, been against religious doctrines which try to restrict a good portion of people?s freedoms to choose what they would like to be.

I was horrified to hear a news broadcast about the shooting in the head and neck, of a 14-year-old Pakistan schoolgirl simply because she had decided to fight for her human right to a school education.

I wonder what sort of deity would prod a man carrying a lethal weapon to pull the trigger and shoot a girl in the head. The shooter must be the worst fanatic to have graced this God-given world of ours. To make matters worse, this evil man?s organisation, calling itself the Taliban, claimed responsibility for this dastardly deed.

The Taliban, I believe, is fighting in many parts of the world especially the Arab world in an effort to rewrite history. Arab civilisation goes back thousands of years and the world would not have? known about this civilisation had it not been for school education. Why is the Taliban scared of educated female members of its society?

My solemn prayers are with this girl until she recovers fully to go back to school. Shame on you, Taliban.

In Zimbabwe, we do have our own ?Taliban?. We have parents who are trying to change the course of history. They are only interested in educating male children while girls are condemned to the kitchen as tradition dictates.

This is as bad as Pakistan talibanism. The attitude against girls has been the norm among the majority of ordinary Zimbabweans. Sadly, our politicians? just pretend to hate Western countries, while in private they enroll most of their female children in these countries? schools.

Fanatics are a great danger to society because what they do in the name of their religion is really anti-God and very inhumane. Besides inventing a world without education for females, the fanatics have invented another evil, the suicide bomber. The whole world, including Africa, should stand as one and fight extremists.

Thoughtful Ideas That Will Improve Your Home | Marijuana for MRSA

Replace counter tops in your bathroom and kitchen with new marble or granite tops. Over time, counters will wear down especially if they are made of laminate. Older homes can have outdated or vintage counters. By replacing the counters you will improve the eye appeal and home value without spending a great deal of cash.

Do some internet research to find out if generic products are the same quality as name brands. Sometimes name brand products are identical to generics that are available under another name. Regardless of what materials you decide to go with, make sure that the contractor installs exactly what you asked for.

When you are looking to renovate a number of rooms in your home, or balance multiple projects simultaneously, it is best to have a plan for each area. All you have to do is look at your written plan to see the next step that you need to take. This way you will still be on track, even if you jump from improvement to improvement.

Clean up throughout your home improvement project to ensure that your project doesn?t get derailed. If you leave dust and plaster all over the floor while trying to install tile, you?ll find nothing sticks. Gee, I wonder why? Clean up every time you demolish something to ensure that the upgrades you put in are done correctly.

For a paint finish that really lasts, always sand, strip and prime, prior to applying a fresh coat. Many people think that skipping the preparatory steps of painting will speed up the process, but down the road old paint will peel through the new finish, ruining your paint job and forcing you to strip off yet another layer of paint before repainting again.

Just because you bought a book on your home improvement or saw a show that highlighted how to do it doesn?t mean you?re an expert. If this is your first time completing a project like this you should expect additional costs and a longer time frame than someone you hire might take.

For the easiest modern touch to the home, consider using wallpaper. Wallpaper these days can offer quite modern and funky designs, which can generate a great update for your home. This can give you a great look for the home with less effort than painting.

Consider a room addition as a major home improvement. Not only will you add space to your home, but you will significantly increase the square footage and value. The most profitable addition to your home is an additional bathroom, but while adding the bathroom add an additional bedroom to increase the value of your home.

To improve your home, try re-framing your entry. Try replacing things like door knobs and locks on your main door. Try to locate a substantial handle-and-lock set that can be easily installed. Nice and sturdy pieces of hardware on the front door can help express that this is a solid home.

One valuable home improvement project that could save you money is the installation of ceiling fans. Having a fan in each of your rooms can help keep them cool and allow the air to circulate. If you use the fans instead of air conditioning, your summer energy bill will be much lower.

Make your real estate remodeling activities more green to save money. You can have substantial long term savings within your investment when you choose environmentally safe materials and appliances. There are many items, from paint to building materials, that will have a much better, and longer-lasting, impact on everyone?s future.

Don?t become disillusioned when your home improvement project takes longer, more money than you expected, or doesn?t turn out as planned. If you?ve prepared correctly you should have a cushion of money to cover the additional cost, or pay to hire someone to fix the mistakes you?ve made, so relax.

Don?t throw out paintbrushes and rollers each time you use them! They can be cleaned and reused as long as you take care of them. Paint pans can be cleaned by letting them dry and then peeling off the paint. Don?t waste your money on pan liners as cleaning the pan itself is simple.

If you are a handy person and can understand plans, consider doing some home improvement jobs yourself. Small and simple projects can improve the overall look of your home. By doing it yourself, you save money and avoid the aggravation of researching a contractor for minor jobs. You will feel more confident and much prouder of your home.

Don?t underestimate your home-improvement project. Before you get started, put all the necessary steps into a project plan. Estimate for more time than you think the project will take. Then have someone else give you a second opinion on your project plan to make sure you did not leave any steps out.

You should feel better after reading those tips when it comes to home improvement. That was a lot to think and read through, but at least you should have an idea of what to do and where to begin with improving your home safer and smarter. In addition, you can always come back to this list.

(AP) ? A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated, but the province appeared to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful temblor hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia. It was felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.

"It looks like the damage and the risk are at a very low level," said Shirley Bond, British Columbia's minister responsible for emergency management said. "We're certainly grateful."

The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of British Columbia, southern Alaska and Hawaii, but later canceled it for the first two and downgraded it to an advisory for Hawaii.

Gerard Fryer, a senior geologist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the first waves hitting shore in Hawaii were smaller than expected.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said early Sunday that the Aloha State was lucky to avoid more severe surges after the powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Canada. Abercrombie said beaches and harbors are still closed statewide.

"We're very, very grateful that we can go home tonight counting our blessings," Abercrombie said.

The weather service also canceled a tsunami advisory for Oregon, leaving northern California as the only spot in North America still under a tsunami advisory.

Dennis Sinnott of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Science said a 69-centimeter (27 inch) wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group. Another 55 centimeter (21 inch) wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island.

"It appears to be settling down," he said. "It does not mean we won't get another small wave coming through."

Canada's largest earthquake since 1700 was an 8.1 magnitude quake on August 22, 1949 off the coast of British Columbia, according to the Canadian government's Natural Resources website. It occurred on the Queen Charlotte Fault in what the department called Canada's equivalent of the San Andreas Fault ? the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates that runs underwater along the west coast of the Haida Gwaii.

In 1970 a 7.4 magnitude quake struck south of the Haida Gwaii.

The USGS said the temblor shook the waters around British Columbia and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock after several minutes. Several other aftershocks were reported.

The quake struck 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Sandspit, British Columbia, on the Haida Gwaii archipelago. People in coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground.

Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements said there was no warning before everything began moving inside and outside the hotel. He said it lasted about three minutes.

"It was a pretty good shock," Thomas, 59, said. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."

After the initial jolt, Thomas began to check the hotel.

"The fixtures and everything were still swinging," he said. "I had some picture frames coming down."

Lenore Lawrence, a resident of Queen Charlotte City on the Haida Gwaii, said the quake was "definitely scary," adding she wondered if "this could be the big one." She said the shaking lasted more than a minute. While several things fell off her mantle and broke, she said damage in her home was minimal.

Many on the B.C. mainland said the same.

"I was sitting at my desk on my computer and everything just started to move. It was maybe 20 seconds," said Joan Girbav, manager of Pacific Inn in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. "It's very scary. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt that."

Residents rushed out of their homes in Tofino, British Columbia on Vancouver Island when the tsunami sirens sounded, but they were allowed to return about two hours after the quake.

In Hawaii, the tsunami warning spurred residents to stock up on essentials at gas stations and grocery stores and sent tourists in beachside hotels to higher floors in their buildings. Bus service into Waikiki was cut off an hour before the first waves, and police in downtown Honolulu shut down a Halloween block party. In Kauai, three schools used as evacuation centers quickly filled to capacity.

Fryer said the largest wave in the first 45 minutes of the tsunami was measured in Maui at more than 5 feet (1.5 meters), about 2 feet (60 centimeters) higher than normal sea levels. No major damage was reported.

In Alaska, the wave or surge was recorded at 4 inches (10 centimeters), much smaller than forecast, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The quake was felt in Craig and other southeast Alaska communities, but Zidek said there were no immediate reports of damage.

Toys are Tools -Thoughtful Toy Reviews: Saturday MindFeed: A ...

Today is October 27, 2012. ?Where was this website one year ago? ?Basically, it had not been "born" yet. ?But in a few days, Toys are Tools will celebrate its one-year birthday! ? I have a big story planned for that day. ?It's something you'll want to have in your family for generations!

First, please let me thank you from the bottom of my heart. ?The fact that anyone is interested in what I have to say still amazes me. ? (You should see how ignored I am in my own home!) ?But seriously, with the one year anniversary of Toys are Tools coming, I thought it might be nice to share with you what I've learned.

  1. The toy world is full of companies run by people who are passionate about toys and learning through play. ? This corner of the world has the lion's share of very creative inventors, designers, & small business owners.???Some of the toys you've seen on this site are actually the result of someone's second job!. ?I am so privileged to know them.
    ?
  2. I still won't write negative reviews. ?You can call me a chicken, that's okay. ?I've been chicken my whole life and it is true that?once in a while my testers and I have encountered a toy that made us say as Tom Hanks said in Big, "I don't get it." ? Why don't I tell you about those? ?I believe that your time is limited and that you are here to find out what to buy. ?Finding out what NOT to buy doesn't expand your choices. ?I would only write a negative review of something if I thought everyone in the world would be standing on line at 2 AM to buy it but I don't believe that the readers here shop that way.

We Made All Kinds of Things?from?david wells?on?Vimeo. ?(Thank you to David Wells and all the experts who have NEVER BEEN PAID by anyone but have talked to me so that Toys are Tools readers can make the most of out of their toy purchases - and most importantly.... have fun!)

  3. Toys are Tools Readers are VERY VERY SPECIAL.??Some of you are moms of toddlers and you're still here even though I don't write about toddler toys! ?Some of you are therapists and teachers who love the toys like the way a sushi chef loves his thousand-dollar knife. ? Some of you are seriously?really savvy parents. ?Your tips and ideas?blow me away.
  4. Blog Reviews: Things that Make You Go HMMMM??? I love writing reviews but I don't think I quite get this blogging business. ?I have encountered blogs "whose opinions are their own" but then they also say "Even though the owner(s) of this blog receives compensation for our posts.." ?Uh, okay.... well maybe that could be true but...?What I've even found is that some "reviewers" may even charge companies by the number of hyperlinks and even photos that they publish in their "review" and yet still that apparently qualifies as "words are my own."? ? hmmmmm.....
      1. But Being Impartial is NOT Easy.??While I feel lucky that most of the stuff we've seen has been fantastic, I am fairly certain that at least some companies, will not send me another product submission if I don't write a favorable review. And believe me I need their cooperation. ?For example, the numbers tell me a review with a giveaway gets read SO MUCH MORE than a review without one (at least within the first month of posting.) ?So I readily admit to you that I have made more editorial space for toy reviews whose companies have a history of giving away items to my readers.??I?should also tell you that irregardless of a giveaway offer, there have been a few occasions that I've decided not to publish a review. ?It's always really cool when the company is grown-up about it and believe me, I've met some. ?Additionally, I still do review products from toy companies who do not offer a product to giveaway to readers and those reviews get my full effort just the same.
      2. Shopping Is Weird Now.? ?Shopping used to be really fun- just a little hard on the feet but still really fun. ?But now for so many of us, a shopping list (especially toys) becomes a list of research projects. ? Even reading my review is more work for you! ? Whatever happened to the salesperson who knew about everything in the store and gave you the best advice? ?I found that kind of person at the Children's General Store in Manhattan where the manager, Michael, was so incredibly knowledgeable, I told him that I was just looking and yet he and I talked forever about toys. ?Of course, I did end up buying something after all, and it was from a company that I had never heard of but Michael said it was good and if you met Michael, you'd he knows everything.
      3. Retailers/Manufacturers- this is for you: ?We are Not Always "Showrooming."? Many?stores don't have someone like Michael and we need him because we have less money and less patience now. ?But most stores don't have Michael. ?They have defective price scanners instead. Still, when I walk into a brick-and-mortar store, I will feel badly about going online to read about something that has caught my interest, because the store manager may think I am doing price comparison. ? But honestly, sometimes I go online because?the box looks interesting but the box is sealed and I want to know more before buying it. ?Some online stores have terrible photos and/or not enough/wrong information. ?Consumers will go to the company page to get more info and then go back to Amazon or another favorite store to buy the product.

Like wine shoppes, I think brick and mortar stores, online and catalog retailers, and a toy company's e-commerce section can start displaying links/QR codes to well-presented reviews/photos/videos right at the product description page or on a little card hanging off the shelf (like in wine shoppes). ?Gold stickers are nice but have you noticed how many there are? I'd rather have a QR code that shows me tons of photos and maybe a quick list of ideas. ?You can put it on a sticker and leave it on the box too! ?Make your best accolades more accessible! ?When a consumer is at a point of making a decision (buy or don't buy), the last page they'll be going to on your site is the "In the News" section.

      4. Consumers: Skip the Reviews Once in a While.?? ?Yes, I did just say that. ?Well, as you can imagine, my shopping time, cross-referencing time, and coupon search time has diminished somewhat and you know what I've managed to do with all the extra time? ?Play with my kids and save my eyes from computer-related stress. ?Besides, making a mistake or being successful based on your own observations and conclusions will always make a better consumer out of you. ?One of the reasons why I am able to write these reviews is because I have made a million mistakes (and counting...)
      5. Thank Goodness For Testers 3-7.? ?Believe me, I am more greedy than my children. ?I want to see and touch and keep everything but that would really hurt my kids. ?What kid gets 2-3 new toys every week? ?That would dampen their creativity and slow their drive for inquiry and experimentation. ?Not to mention they would become... .. spoiled brats? ?So I am so grateful to the testers and their parents who take awesome pictures, give me incredible feedback, and work hard to figure out how to best use a toy. ? ?For one $12 toy, I may get 15 emails full of pictures and keen observations and that is likely on top of a phone call and more requests from me to please get a photo of this or try playing with something this way..... ?

Will Toys Are Tools Still Be Here in 2014? ? 'Tis Your Call

I am going to need your help to make this website see the holiday season of 2013. ?I do not know how to make money with this site other than doing all the wretched things that I described above and still refuse to do. ?I thought there'd be dozens of toy companies wanting to advertise here but no one has been knocking on that door. But that is totally okay! ?Like I said, there are so many awesome companies out there and the fact that these companies
      1. NOT only send?product submissions?to Toys are Tools (Toys R Who?)
      2. BUT many of them also send review units to an expert of MY choice too??
      3. AND then give me at least one free product (or more) to give away to readers?
All that for a blog with just 600+ Facebook Likes? ?If these companies are going to advertise, they are going to have to advertise at a blog with heavier traffic, right? ?The readership here is a small community and yet these companies have made a huge effort in trying to get Toys are Tools' readers' attention. ??
Conclusion: You Are the Boss You might be asking me how I could keep this going if it is as unprofitable as it has been. ?In truth, it has been high octane fun that has been fueling this engine. ?Personally, I really needed that. Learning all this stuff about child development wasn't exactly a choice for me but I do love it.

However, in the past two weeks I have written about toys originating from the UK, Japan, Taiwan, and of course, the U.S. ?Next week I'll be talking to you about toys from Sweden and the Netherlands! ?But all this takes a lot of work and luckily I have begun freelance writing at a magazine but to maintain this site as my primary occupation, it has to make more cents because this kind of reviewing and all these photos and interviews with experts and testers takes a lot of time.

Here is how you can fuel this engine:

      1. If you shop at Amazon, step in through my door first. ?Just click the square below and then you can bookmark it and use that bookmark every time go to Amazon. ? Amazon doesn't give tons of money and there are a few purchases that don't apply for "commission" but for ones that do, Toys are Tools would get a small commission. It may not sound like much but if everyone does their shopping through this door or any of my other Amazon links- almost all of their purchases will qualify- toy or not- even a pair of snow boots that someone bought this month after coming through one of my "doors" counts! ?The catch is that YOU HAVE TO PUT IT IN YOUR SHOPPING CART BEFORE LOGGING OUT of Amazon if you did indeed go through my link.? If you go through my link today and you put it in your cart right then and there but buy it next month, I will still receive the commission.
      ??

      2. ?Believe me, I didn't even want to do this link thing myself - what if you think I'm hyping up the review just so you'll buy it through my Amazon link? ?I think long time readers will know from my writing that I wouldn't do that. Also, most of you come to read toy news and you are not coming because you are in the mood to shop but the next two months may be different, right? ?Basically, I want to keep these reviews going for anyone?who wants to see them and I need your help. ?I understand if you do the Amazon thing for church or school already but if you don't, then please consider bookmarking my Amazon link and using it forever and ever and ever, okay?

      3. In case you're wondering...., I CAN NOT SEE who made the purchases but I can see what was purchased?and that means so much to me. Of course it's okay if you don't buy anything but if you did, I get to know that I might have helped someone make a decision. ?That's also another form of payment.

      4. ?Finally, my last request is that you please share this site with as many people as possible.? ?I think rather than buying random ads everywhere, it is better to attract your circle of friends because Toys are Tools readers are a different breed of people and most likely your friends have similar goals and interests. ? Print out a current review/giveaway and give it to your teacher, OT, SLP, psychologist, friends, grandparents.... ? ? That will help this teeny tiny infant revenue possibly grow up to early toddler stages. ? Or just write on Facebook or whatever is your social media of choice... "Hey guys, I found a really great place that tells you about the best toys for our kids. ?Really fun and educational! Stuff you've never seen before..."

Oh, and if you decide to do this but you often forget, don't feel bad. ?I forget a lot of stuff too! and shopping SHOULD be fun!

So that is it. ? You are all part of this experiment.? ? Collectively, we control the future of this site because despite my passion for toys and writing reviews, soon I will have to start talking to the husband about boring stuff like saving money, college fund, retirement... ugh.... ? Neptune Beach breast cancer survivor embraces journey

Debbie Cooper was 110 feet underwater and losing oxygen. Her scuba-diving tank had run out and she began to panic. Suddenly her husband, Robby, handed her his air valve. They began to buddy-breathe, an emergency rescue-breathing technique.

?If I ran out of air, I knew my husband would be there to help me make it back to the surface,? said Cooper, recalling the life-changing experience.

Cooper, who lives in Neptune Beach, compared it to a baptism.

Two years later on Jan. 10, the healthy 49-year-old with no family history of breast cancer was diagnosed with the disease?s Stage 3. Cooper said she would essentially have to buddy-breathe the next nine months, getting by with the support of her friends, family and co-workers.

Women with no family history of breast cancer are still at risk due to age and gender. The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program reports 12.4 percent of women will develop breast cancer at some time during their lives.

After a week of isolation, Cooper and her yellow lab, Salli, spent a day at the beach. She inhaled the essence from the saltwater air and swallowed her feelings of despair and hopelessness. After a few deep breaths, she told herself, ?I can do this.?

Cooper?s treatment began with chemotherapy and was followed by radiation.

Rather than going to a barber as her hair began falling out due to the chemo, she let her daughter, Ashley Guy, cut the leftover strands. Cooper sported a mohawk and buzz cut before it all fell out.

?We cut it off before cancer could take it,? Guy laughed.

According to Kathleen Gargin of Mayo Clinic, Cooper had no major complications throughout the treatments and maintained a positive attitude.

Her ?warrior bands,? a collection of bracelets and necklaces given to her by friends, family and strangers, encouraged her to stay strong.

Cooper embraced the journey. Girls? night outs with her younger sisters continued. She and her brother-in-law had ?Who?s balder?? contests.

Her personality blossomed. Fuchsia leggings and a neon pink tutu became her signature look. She created alter egos and wore fashionable wigs. She said pretending to be somebody else enabled her to learn more about herself. There was White Chocolate, a sandy-blond short curly fro, and her favorite Cinnamon, a sassy golden-blond shoulder-width wig.

Jacquelin Harris has been friends with Cooper since 2001. Cooper, she said, is her hero.

?She is the same bubbly energized bunny but a lot more assertive,? Harris said.

Cooper?s treatments ended this month. She is cancer-free and ?buddy-breathes? with local women struggling with breast cancer.
