J.J. Abrams is currently hard at work on Star Trek Into Darkness (and we still hate that title), but it seems he?s not entirely fixated on the latest adventures of Kirk and Spock because he?s acquired the rights to a new, and vastly different, property.
Latino Review broke the news?that Abrams has recently purchased the rights to Beastlies with the hopes of turning the adorable little creatures into a film and animated series along the lines of The Smurfs. And then Beastlies creator Leslie Levings confirmed the scoop on Twitter.
If you have no idea what the Beastlies are (we didn?t either), allow us to share our newly acquired knowledge. Beastlies are a series of cute, kid-friendly monsters hand-sculpted by artist Levings. Currently, Levings? lovable little monsters are purchasable through her website. We suspect that will change if there?s eventually an entire Beastlies franchise ? that or Levings will be sculpting until her arms fall off.
We don?t know what kind of story the Beastlies will get, but the creatures do have the look of something that could really take off with younger audiences ? maybe this is the next My Little Pony. We?ll have to wait and see where this all eventually winds up, but with Abrams involved, the odds of success look pretty good.?
